25 YEARS
WITH
HANDICAPPED ADULTS OF
VOLUSIA COUNTY (HAVOC)
1977 -- 2002
HAVOC was originally named HEAR (The Halifax Extraordinary Activities and Recreation). It was organized locally in the fall of 1976 by Kevin White and his mother, MaryEllen, Al Rush, Patsy Clear (later Patsy Rush), John Albright, Norman Ensley, Howard Weingarden, Marion Brickta, Barbara Manacus, Pat Husemann, Dorothy Sweitzer, and Marcia Armstrong. The group’s purpose was to combine athletic and social activities and to provide peer support for the physically disabled. The name was changed to Handicapped Adults of Volusia County (HAVOC) in the spring of 1977. Some of the activities that we were involved with are:- attending previews of shows at Daytona Playhouse, bowling in a Bowling League and, even having one of our members go sky-diving and scuba diving.
HAVOC and the Beach Department co-sponsored picnics for several years at Ponce Inlet where our members enjoyed riding on jet skis (with lifeguards), on the pontoon boats (also with lifeguards), and in general, having a great time. At several of these picnics HAVOC invited other support groups to participate.
One of the first projects was started in cooperation with VOTRAN to develop a paratransit (door-to-door) bus system. The door-to-door system involved smaller, lift-equipped buses, originally named “Handi-Wheels.” This work was initiated in the Spring of 1977 by a large group of social workers
