Presidents Message
August, 2004
If you were unsure about what to do in the event of an emergency, if you attended the July meeting, you are much better informed after the presentation by Debbie Shull of Volusia County Emergency Operations.
I am continually impressed by the attendance at the monthly meetings. There were 31 members and guest at the last meeting, thanks to the efforts of Nick Nagy and his committee, A.J. Devies and Alice Melanson. The HAVOC meeting notices are now published in the News Journal and any other publication you can find. We continue to bring in new members thanks to everyone’s help. All of the committees are doing an excellent job with their respective areas. Anyone interested in serving on one of the committee’s, please let me know. I would like to see every member involved in some aspect of HAVOC.
The third annual Beach Party Picnic will be held on Saturday, September 25 from 11:00 to 3:00 at Lighthouse Point Park. Ponce Inlet. It was voted at the July 7 meeting that HAVOC will provide the meat and everyone is asked to bring a covered dish. Grace Harris is the picnic chairperson and Yvonne Dixon is co-chair. Please let Grace or Yvonne know if you are willing to help with the planning.
Pat Northey, Volusia County Councilwoman will present the program at the August meeting. Ms. Northey is running for Elections Supervisor and will answer questions about County Government issues and voting rights for the disabled. Hope we can keep up the good attendance. Invite everyone you know.

The President David Dixon called the meeting to order at 1:00
President David Dixon then introduced him self and ask for every one else to introduced there self. There were 28 in attendance at the meeting with 3 new guests in attendance.
Speaker: Deborah Schuller who talked to us about Hurricanes and where to go in case of one in your area. And also she talked about the means of transportation to get to the safe housing. You must call Votran to have your name and area register in case of emergency for your safety. But this doesn’t mean they will call you! You must call them at the time of needs. You are reasonable to call them. Also she talked about the personal needs you need to bring with you to the shelter? They only provide space for you to stay. You must bring your own special food’s and bathroom needs. Deborah Schuller also said you should make a list of all your priority for insurances record and take pictures of them also if you can. Deborah Schuller left with us information to pass out if you were not there I will bring more next meeting. She also gave us a Volusia County disaster preparedness guide. I have more if you want one.
Also Ken Fisher talked to us about the changes in the Medicaid that may help to give Medicaid people a discounts on Votran. This is for those who quantified for it.
We also talked about our Beach Party Picnic coming up
Sept 25,2004. Time is 11:00 am till 3:00 pm. We also voted on using some money out of Havoc funds for the meat for the picnic.
Lucy Albanese has a few raffle tickets left!! The drawing will be held at our next meeting. She is very happy at the turn out of our sales. To all those who helped make this a great one. Thank you!! There $1 each or 6 for $5 please help us sell them.
Meeting was adjourned at 3:00
Respectfully Submitted: Recording
Secretary Grace Harris

Pain Relieving Patch
"SALONPAS"
Dr. Armand Zilioli, an orthopedic surgeon, speaker at our March, 2004 meeting, and polio survivor recommended the pain relieving patch SALONPAS to me. At this point, my pain mainly in my right shoulder blade and upper arm, is undiagnosed other than over- use. Dr. Zilioli is currently on staff at the VA hospital in St. Petersburg and is a former member of the post-polio group of Winter Park, FL, along with myself.
Salonpas patches are Over The Counter, inexpensive (I bought the box with 40 patches at WalMart Super Center for $3.88), and best of all, they Relieve My Pain.
Also, since salicylate is in the aspirin family, a person who is allergic to aspirin might want to be on the lookout for a possible allergic reaction to the patch. I have not seen this aspirin allergic warning on the Salonpas box so I suppose it has not been a problem.
