Presidents Message
July 2005
Good News, the County Council voted 4 to 3 to not purchase the Diebold Voting Machines because of the outcry from Voter advocates. Problems with this machine were numerous, the worst of which is that it does not have a verifiable paper trail in the event of a recount. I spoke before the council on behalf of all disabled people against this particular machine because although it is supported by the blind community, it will not accommodate quadriplegics. The council will be looking at a better machine to meet the needs of all disabled and to create a paper ballot that can verify votes.
Remember that our 4th Annual Beach Party Picnic will be coming up on September 24, 2005 from 11:00 a.m., to 3:00 p.m. HAVOC will provide the meat and everyone is asked to bring a covered dish. This is an opportunity for all members and interested parties to get together and socialize. This will be a special event so if you have any ideas on activities, please contact Grace Harris or her committee.
The program for July will be Mark Rutledge with Metro Crime Prevention. He will be talking to us about crime prevention for the handicapped and elderly and also a subject that has been in the news repeatedly on Identify Theft.
Attendance at the meetings has been from 25-35 even with rainy weather. Let’s hope for sunshine for the July meeting and a larger attendance yet.

A motion and seconded were made to accept the minutes of May 4th meeting as is.
President Dixon talked about the voting machines and how they don’t have a paper trail to make sure all votes are accounted for if needed for a recount. He asked for a vote to extend the date to for approval. And to be represented by the A.C.L.U. to keep the Volusia County from purchasing 210 touch screen machines. To replace them for ones that do leave paper trails those actually are waiting to be State Certified. The group took a vote to be represented by the A.C.L.U.
