Presidents Message
May 2005
Despite rain and hail on the 4th of May, there were 22 brave souls who came out to participate in the HAVOC meeting. An interesting program was presented on the Independent Living Resource Center (ILRC) by Starr Lindsey. We continue to get new members at each meeting and I want to give a special welcome to all who have jointed recently. I hope you will become active and work with one of the established committees, or if there is an issue we need to be addressing as advocates for the handicapped, please let us know and we will develop a new committee.
I recently had an opportunity to participate in a community health assessment sponsored by the Volusia County Health Department. It was interesting to learn that while the health department is doing a good job of addressing the health needs of their constituency, the overall health system that includes all health providers including Halifax Medical
Center, HMO’s, Physicians, etc. are not effectively assessing the needs of all citizens in Volusia County in a coordinated fashion and that individuals including the disabled are not always aware of services that are available. There were many participants from agencies and the community as a whole providing input into the assessment. A final report of the results will be available.
The Volusia County MPO will be hosting a series of Walkable Community Workshops with Ormond Beach, DeBary, Daytona Beach Shores and Holly Hill. The workshops will be held May 25, 26 and 27. These workshops are highly interactive and aid in education, planning, visioning, implementation and coordination efforts toward a more pedestrian friendly and a true multi-modal Walkable Community. I will be participating as your representative.

President David Dixon called the meeting to order at 1:00 p.m.
There were 20 members and 2 guests present. It was a very wet day. There was low turn out this month.
Introductions were done at this time.
President Dixon introduced the speaker: Starr Lindsey
She talked about computer classes. Called Victory Lane created by Center Independent Living of Jacksonville. Where possibilities are unlimited!
Victory Lane has a computer learning program. Where you can learn how to burn a music CD, or download and save those family pictures. Now is the time to learn. For more information about how to use a computer.
Contact # is 386-671-1960 or Email her: starr@victorylanecil.org
A motion and seconded were made to accept the minutes of April 4 meeting as is.
President Dixon asked for Committee Reports
Carol Carmella, Treasurer: She is not here at this time she is out of town. Report will be made next month.
Michael Porter. Pedestrian Safety Chairman: He talked about living will and that if anyone needs the forms he gave them to Grace Harris the Recording Sec’y. Also he said he would be going to a meeting this month on traffic management on May 25. More information to follow next month.
AJ Devies, Accessibility Chairman: She still is having problems on sidewalk signs. And also there are 2 new walk ways on the beach now. But we still are having bathroom problems for the handicap. They are not up to code. So if you have any information that would help please call her. Please help her out and let’s see what we can do to help.
Nick Nagy, Membership/Publicity Chairperson: Penny Saver runs a HAVOC add which depends on available space. The News-Journal has been very reliable at running the add.
Joan Cleary, Fundraising Committee: You my buy 50/50 tickets before the meeting and after the meeting. Drawing will be held after the meeting is adjourned. The lucky winner this month was Jeanette Cage
President David Dixon and Grace Harris talked about the picnic. And there was a motion and approved that Havoc would pay for the meat for the picnic. There will be chicken. Also we took a vote on the date and every one approved the date.
THE PICNIC WILL BE SEPT- 24-2005 ON A SAT.
EVERYONE BRING A COVER DISH.
Anyone have any ideas let me know. Joan Cleary had a great idea about having a 50/50 drawing at the picnic. So let me know if any one has anything. I thought bingo would be nice too. More information at the next meeting.
Also next month is cover dish so everyone bring a dish,
And don’t forget!! Put food init to!!
Thanks Grace Harris
(Meeting adjourned at 2:20 p.m.)
Respectfully Submitted:
Recording Secretary, Grace Harris

This webpage address for the Vial of L.I.F.E.
program I mentioned in May 4th meeting is
http://www.ci.daytona-beach.fl.us/fire/vial_of_life.htm
The Vial of L.I.F.E. program consists of a form for medical information that is
needed by emergency medical responders and a decal to be placed on your front
door. The decal lets emergency medical responders know that the form is
attached to the front of the refrigerator door. The information on the form
consists of the names and phone numbers of emergency contacts, doctors,
medications and medical conditions. For people with many medical problems or
medications this can prevent inappropriate treatment or life-threatening drug
interactions. It can save a life!
The webpage describes the program in more detail and has links to the form and
decal, both of which can be downloaded and printed.
