Presidents Message
June 2004
Covered Dish Luncheon
I hope all of you will attend this very important meeting since we will be honoring the charter members of Havoc. According to the history, Al and Patsy Rush (formerly Clear), Steve Hoyte, Kevin White and his mother Mary Ellen, John Albright, Norman Ensley, Howard Weingarden, Marion Brickta, Barbara Manacus, Pat Husemann (deceased), Dorothy Sweizler and Marcia Armstrong were all charter members. If anyone knows of someone who is missing from the list, please let me know or if you know someone on the list who is still around, please give them a personal invitation to attend the luncheon and ceremony.
On May 7, 2004 as chairman of the Volusia/Flagler bicycle/pedestrian task force with the guidance of Dan Burden with Walk America we conducted a walk able audit on pedestrian safety on the west side and east side of the county.
In the morning session, the audit was performed walking the streets of Deland with 20 participants. The afternoon session was conducted in the downtown area of Daytona Beach and attracted 35 participants. During both walks, all participants were educated in the use of the wheelchair concerning the curb cuts, sidewalk construction and push button locations at intersections. Also, sidewalk obstructions were pointed out for mobility and visually impaired. During our observations, we did not find any curb cuts that were up to ADA standards. The curb cut slopes were too steep and the rise was in excess of the ¼ inch rise. There was one incident of a wheelchair occupant falling forward out of the chair, another tipping over. The majority were unable to accommodate the slope of the ramp.
At a wrap up at the end of both sessions, the most common comment was “I was totally unaware of what handicapped people are subjected to”. These participants were elected officials, planners, engineers and general citizens of Volusia County.
Frank Bruno, Volusia County Councilman will be our speaker for the June meeting and will participate in honoring our charter members. Please plan to come and help us honor those that paved the way for HAVOC to become an important part of the disabled community.
