Presidents Message

May 2005

There were 32 members and guests present at the April meeting. For those of you who were unable to attend, the program was changed at the last minute. Yvonne Dixon was originally scheduled to talk about the Front Porch Florida project. Due to concerns regarding the County Council’s purchase of accessible voting machines that do not have a paper trail, Susan Pincheon with the Florida Fair Elections Coalition gave a presentation on need for a paper trail to guarantee a fair election.

By the time you read this, Yvonne and I will be in Tallahassee for Volusia Days. We will have an opportunity to talk to legislators about disability rights and other issues facing the citizens of Volusia County.

It was decided at the last meeting to try again this year for a Beach Party Picnic. If you recall, it was cancelled last year due to the hurricanes. In prior years it has been a very successful event. Volunteers are needed to help plan and to assist at the picnic. More discussion will occur at the May meeting regarding date, time, place, etc. Anyone who will help, please contact Grace Harris, chairperson.

A question arose at the last meeting regarding why HAVOC is advocating for night driving on the beach. While this is only one of and perhaps not the most important of the many issues about beach access for the disabled, it becomes a question of equality which is what the ADA law is all about. We have to ask ourselves, are we willing to settle for minimal access (crumbs) to the beach or to we want to have equal access guaranteed by the ADA law? I will leave you with that thought.

I am trying to schedule Jim Ryan with Volusia County Emergency Management for the May program, but do not have it confirmed. We always like to hear about the upcoming Hurricane Season and what we can do to prepare ourselves.
