Presidents Message

May 2004

A suggestion was made by the executive board to honor the original charter members of HAVOC that are still around. According to the history, Al and Patsy Rush (formerly Clear), Steve Hoyte, Kevin White and his mother Mary Ellen, John Albright, Norman Ensley Howard Weingarden, Marion Brickta, Barbara Manacus, Pat Husemann, Dorothy Sweizler and Marcia Armstrong were all charter members. I know some are not still with us. If anyone knows how to locate any of the listed members who are still in the area, please let me know. We would like to honor these people with a lifetime membership at our June covered dish luncheon meeting.

For those of you who are not aware, HAVOC was organized in 1977 with the purpose of combining social and athletic activities and to provide peer support for the physically disabled. The HAVOC purpose has not strayed from the original intent of the group. HAVOC was, is and continues to be advocates for handicapped adults of Volusia County.

I wanted to remind everyone the Walk or Wheel for Meals on Wheels is coming up this month. The first two walks will be on Saturday, April 24. One will be at Gemini Springs and one in New Smyrna Beach. The Daytona Beach walk will be May 1. HAVOC members have always supported this event. Please call Yvonne at the number below if you would like to participate or if you would be willing to make a donation for those of us who will be participating. Any help for this worthwhile event will be appreciated.

HAVOC

April 7, 2004

The President David Dixon called the meeting to order at 1:00.

President David Dixon then introduced him self and ask for every one else to introduced there self, at this time we went around the room introduce our selves. There were 22 in attendance at the meeting with 4 new guests in attendance.

The topics for the meeting were:

1.    We had a special speaker her name who Lydia Gregg, she was from Mid-Florida housing partnership Inc. She talked about how we can become a homebuyer (Hud). She passed out flyers and talked to us for around an hour and there were lots of question at the end. She shared with us a lot of information, contact her if your interested in homebuyer programs. There are many programs to help you get in a home of your own. Also website available  (www.mfhp.org)

2.    Then the by-laws were read and any changes talked about and voted on at this time. Barbara Goldstein has to make a few changes and the revised by-laws, will read again at the May meeting.

3.    The minutes of the latest Executive Meeting was read by Grace Harris,  and was discussed.

(A). We talked about honoring the members who have been with Havoc a long time. Havoc has been going now for 27 years.

(B). We also talked about honoring them at the next cover dish. Will talk more about this at next meeting.

(C).  We also talked about having more cover dish meeting and every one voted against it so they will stay as they were (quarterly).

(D).  Then we talked about handicapped parking at the Halifax hospital, there seems to be a problem on handicap van parking. They are not following the laws and we need to come up with some ideas to make them follow them. We need everyone’s support to call the hospital to make complaints about it.

(E). Then we talked about up dating our member’s profiles. Learn a few things about them and there needs.

(F). Then we talked about a new updated sign in sheet I hope everyone likes this way better. Just put a check next to your name and new visitors and new member fill name in on the second page bottom.

4.  Michael Porter had nothing to report today, on Pedestrian Safety.

Meeting was adjourned at 2:48

Respectfully Submitted: Recording Secretary

Grace Harris our recording Secretary has taken over the History & ID badges for Alice Melanson. Releasing her of the mounting tasks she had accumulated. As she will be leaving us in the future.

Please turn in your ID badge at the end of each meeting. The expense to replace them has been mounting for HAVOC. Grace Harris is managing the ID badges now. They’ll also be on the table near back entrance. Get yours till Grace learns your names.
