BASIC FACTS
BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY
Most of Orange City's commerce is tourist-oriented-shopping cnters, motels, and fast-food
emporiums along U.S. 17-92 and Enterprise Road. Employment is mainly service-oriented
(store clerks, office jobs, construction, electronics and agriculture). There is some
light manufacturing and, at the edge of town, several nurseries. Some 350,000 jobs are
within commuting distance.
CLIMATE
The area's mean annual temperature is 70 degrees F, ranging from January's low of 40
degrees and high of 70 degrees to July's mid-60's and mid-80's respectively. The average
annual rainfall is 56 inches and humidity is 56 percent.
DINING AND SHOPPING
Fine dining, country cooking, ethnic specialties and many fast food franchises are here.
Shop at Four Townes, Village Marketplace, Crown Center, Village Square and Three Seasons
Plaza, plus numerous second-hand shops.
EDUCATION
Students in grades kindergarten through fifth attend Orange City Elementary School, 555
East University Avenue. DeLand Middle School houses sixth through eighth graders, and high
school students attend DeLand High School.
Higher education facilities include Stetson University in DeLand; Daytona Beach Community
College at Four Townes Campus/Debary; Bethune-Cookman College and Embry-Riddle
Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach; Seminole Community College in Sanford; plus the
University of Central Florida, Rollins College and Valencia Community College, all in
Orlando.
HEALTH CARE
Memorial Hospital West Volusia In DeLand and Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford
are within 15 minutes driving time. Volusia Medical Center in Orange City is a 97 bed
facility with a diagnostic and treatment center. Some 350 health professionals and several
nursing homes are in the immediate area.
HOUSING
Area residences include just-built structures, 100-plus year old homes, medium and
estate-sized lots, older neighborhoods with large trees, plus rental apartments,
condominiums and mobile home parks.
PUBLIC LIBRARY
Part of the Volusia County Library system, Dickinson Memorial Library houses large-print
books, books on tape and a reference department. The library, which was listed on the
National Register of Historic Places in 1995, is open Tuesday through Saturday.
POPULATION
In 1992, Orange City had nearly 6,000 residents. The population is expected to increase to
10,000 by 2000 and to 20,000 by 2010.

TRANSPORTATION
Most visitors arrive by car o n I-95 and I-4, or by plane through Daytona Beach
International Airport and Orlando International Airport. Amtrak passengers disembark in
DeLand; the Auto Train stops at Sanford. Greyhound has a bus terminal in DeLand.
Votran, the West Volusia County transit, transports citizens to DeLand, DeBary and
Deltona. Eventually, the plan calls for the bus service to be extended to Daytona Beach
and Orlando.
