Have you visited the Historic Athens Theatre in downtown DeLand? They always have so much great stuff going on. Live theatre, great concert events, dance companies, and even The Rocky Horror Picture Show at the end of this month for Halloween.
The Athens Theatre is a classic American theatre which was once the centerpiece of DeLand and is a beautiful example of Italian Renaissance architecture. It was designed by Murray King, a prominent Orlando architect in 1921 and opened in January of 1922. Henry DeLand, the founder of Deland, wanted to create a city that would be the “Athens of Florida” and that’s how it got its name. It was handcrafted mostly by local workers and is now almost 100 years old.
